Do’s and don'ts when writing your SOP
Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) is what sets you apart from other applications. You can think of it as a preamble to your objectives and abilities that you wish to highlight in your application to an institution. You must remember the essential dos and don'ts while writing an exceptional SOP for a successful kick-start so that you are not just another face in the throng.
Do’s - Useful tips
- Your SOP should have a captivating beginning and a motivating conclusion. Most essential, it must be unique; do not plagiarize someone else's SOP.
- If you are applying for a Masters or higher level course, discuss your academic history, research, and future aspirations. In the case of an undergraduate course, concentrate on short-term goals and career interests.
- Your SOP should discuss your educational goals in terms of the past, present, and future. A connecting link and a clear articulation of goals and interests are required.
- After reading your SOP, the admission committee should be able to see how you can offer value and contribute to the university in terms of research and future opportunities in your chosen field. First, completely review the website of the university's relevant programme pages to confirm you are a good fit for the programme and meet its eligibility requirements.
- Write your SOP in the active voice and make sure you present facts in a style that demonstrates your positive attitude and passion. If you have any remarks or references, rather than being straightforward, try quoting them with pertinent instances.
